Time to stop raving about Iphone 3G? A Better Phone Is Out!
Submitted by Alex on Wed, 2008-07-30 16:57.Bring Microsoft to justice
Submitted by Alex on Mon, 2007-05-14 21:24.It has been reported today on digg and everywhere else about Microsoft cracking down on Free and Open Software with a lawsuit. They claim that Linux and the likes infringe on more than 200 of their patents and want to collect royalty! Patenting is a concept that it not so easily applied to things like computer algorithms or ideas. Richard Stallman in his talk on patents (see video) mentions that a patent office clerk gets several hours to cross-check if a new patent application infringes on already existing ones. read more »
NativePE XP bootable is a great promise, but doesn't work!
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2007-05-02 16:06.Basically this was supposed to create me a bootable CD with all the recovery apps handy. Also I wanted to see my hard drives. I wish it went smoothly for me, but nope... nothing works. The project is a great promise, but still very undercooked http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1662 read more »
Windows Vista - Do Not Buy!
Submitted by Alex on Sun, 2007-03-04 08:36.It really is just a very expensive face lift for XP. For the average user the noticeable pros are: a better looking (but not the best) graphical interface. Here are some cons: - Uses much more system resources, all for the better looks (more RAM, CPU and graphical card cycles). These resources could be instead used to run your Office or web-browser faster - Very expensive - Conflicts with much of the existing hardware. Requires you to buy a new system. read more »
Windows XP boot - a dark zone
Submitted by Alex on Mon, 2007-02-19 10:51.Like most of you here I have a desktop with Windows XP pro on it. I would normally have it on at all times as it serves as my file server and my answering machine and my email/IM center, etc. But every once in a while I had to reboot to get the updates through or to install some new hardware. The freaky thing was that I had to press ESC or space or some other key, during the boot or else it would freeze. Don't ask me how I figured it or how this works, all I know is that it solved my problem. So, yesterday, being a diligent geek that I am, I finally set down to debug it.... read more »
Visual Studio Intellisense - IntelliSUCKS!
Submitted by Alex on Wed, 2007-02-07 15:31.Really, just kill it! I gave up on using it and so should you: rename feacp.dll and to hell with it! Your days are counted on this planet, don't waste your time on this memory eating time-wasting monster. Try using Visual Assist (or something similar).  Then, of course, you get problems with Windows Forms designer and such... life is never easy. read more »
Firefox slow to open a new tab
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2007-02-07 10:36.Ok , this is some new behavior i'm experienceing with FF 2.0. When I double-click in a tab bar to open a new tab it take up to 8 seconds to open it. Sometimes it goes away after restarting the FF ... sometimes it doesn't. Looking in task manager all I see is that FF consumes huge amounts of memory (up to 200 MB working set). I'm at a loss here!
Google thinks they are smarter than you - again!
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2007-01-24 23:21.I tried rotating one of my son's pic's using Google's Picasa2 today. Guess what!? It doesn't really rotate the actual JPEG file, instead it memorizes the operation internally. In other words, things will look and act as they should, but! as long as you are using Picasa. Have you, by any chance, want to view your file by using standard Windows image viewer, you are in for a surprise, the pic remains unchanged! Turns out, there is a way around this: just click Ctrl-S to "save the changed image" in picasa. Still...was enough to piss me off! read more »
Firefox toolbar tooltips missing
Submitted by Alex on Tue, 2007-01-09 20:30.I am spending lots of time tweaking FireFox recently, so I figured I will gripe about the things that annoy my the most. I noticed several weeks ago that yellow mouse tooltips stopped showing. It manifested in ForecastFox, Google Calendar weather icons and Google Calendar Notifier extensions. Searching the web did not help, because I was getting tons of irrelevant info about FF displaying TITLE , but not ALT in tooltips. Eventually read more »
Programmers curse!
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2006-11-28 11:19.Boy, do I hate software glitches! But not as much as those annoying mistakes introduced on purpose by some narrow-minded a…holes! There are numerous occasions when developers implement some features “in good faithâ€, which make absolutely no sense to users, are tremendously confusing and even incorrect from the every user’s standpoint! Here is another little example which I would laugh at another day, but combined with a sh.t load I went through it just totally pissed me off: lists or data rows are numbered starting with 0 (Zero!). read more »
