Swine flu histeria continued: Level 5
Submitted by AngryUzr on Mon, 2009-05-04 13:23So, according to CDC we have a couple of hundred infected folks in US alone. But what is surprising is that none of them died! None! Oh, a 2-year old boy from Mexico, very tragic, but come on, little kids die from regular flu complications every year. Thousands of them!
Now what about Mexico? I tried to dig into those 20 or so deaths in Mexico from H1N1 epidemics. Unfortunately, the article in Wikipedia on this cites New York Times as a source! Can you imagine, what kind of information void there is if an article in a mass printed newspaper suddenly becomes a source in an "encyclopedia"?
Dissecting humane treatment of farmed chickens: Part 2
Submitted by Alex on Tue, 2009-03-03 11:05In Dissecting humane treatment of farmed chickens: Part 1 we have elaborated on how it might be economically unfeasible to raise free range chickens. Now let us consider the following questions: Are organic chickens safer to eat than non-organic chickens? Or maybe more nutritious? Are these free-farmed chickens good for your health?
I hate big stinky dogs!!!
Submitted by MEGApitch on Wed, 2008-12-17 23:55I hate big stinky dogs!!!
A couple of my friends have big dogs…. And they stink! The dogs I mean!
Not that my friends do not wash their dogs, they do; but freaking creatures just constantly release this stench, no matter what you do. And the bigger the dog the more it stinks!
I hate them, hate them.
Safety First? Or Don’t make my kneecaps laugh
Submitted by MEGApitch on Thu, 2008-12-11 12:19I first hand know that many labs ignore/by-pass regulation about double-bagging bio hazard material which is to be autoclaved. Actually, in most labs this safety measure is not even mentioned to new junior employees
in charge of autoclaving (needless to say that most of the time these people are part timers with as little as one year of science related degree). I learned this regulation by being "overly anal" (as described by one of my ex-co-workers).

On estrogen, beer and the credibility of various types of information
Submitted by Alex on Mon, 2007-12-03 11:52I was recently pointed to the harmful effects of drinking beer. A subsequent investigation has revealed a number of studies on the relation between beer consumption and high levels of estrogen (the female hormone), in particular so-called phytoestrogens.
Antioxidant supplements increase the risk of death
Submitted by ventagirl on Wed, 2007-02-28 20:31Antioxidant was a buzz word for a while. Antioxidant supplements such as vitamin A or E were marketed as health improving substances. How many people are taking them? I used to take them every once in a while honestly believing that it'd help me stay fit and healthy. Not anymore. According to this release a systematic review of previous studies shows that beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E significantly increase the risk of death. Unbelievable!
