Menthol is used to hook young smokers: study!

At least according to this study published in the American Journal of Public Health. What can I say? Wow! I't all about money baby!

AT&T on its way to total control

Slate writes that AT&T is seriously considering digging through all our emails, chats, downloads and web stumbles. The excuse is "looking for content that violates US copyright laws", but the possibilities are truly endless!

Like that story goes, it's enough for that poor senator to google "hot asses" once in his life and his political career is riuned. Brought to you by your friends at AT&T!

Net Neutrality

I was struck by recent statements by Department of Justice on net neutrality. They are comparing it to the US postal service, by saying there is nothing unusual about the practice of
setting different levels of service and pricing. Here's why I think it is a dum-dum comparison: read more »

How credit card companies rip you off!

As I logged in to my Discover card online acconut to make a payment I noticed the usual calendar gadget missing. See, I used to schedule my payment for the last day possible, without incurring any fees (usually the 25th of the month). My reasoning was "why let them use my money for a month if I can do it myself?" right?

Today I find out that the bastards have removed the calendar to replace it with this:

StumbleUpon sold their soul to E-bay!

It's official, they confirmed it in their blog. Let me see, what could possibly ebay want from this service? Ah, yes! sell freaking ads to their huge audience!!! What else? That is why we need open source, people. If they sell of, we create a clone (it's open source, so is free to copy) and everyone just migrates, i.e. moves their profiles there! read more »

How did Coca-Cola become such a huge company?

It's just a drink, it doesn't even hydrate you, it has no nutritional benefit whatsoever, if you want caffeine you could drink coffee, so why the hell is Coca-cola such a huge cash machine? Is it just down to clever marketing on their behalf that has somehow kept millions of people drinking this substandard chemical cocktail of questionable origin? Surely the novelty of carbonation has worn off, I mean we got over agent orange and thalidamyde so why does this crap continue to make a bunch of people that wouldn't care if you live or die inordinate amounts of cash?  read more »

No vitamin C in drink

Wikinews reports that GlaxoSmithKline was fined for a misleading advertising in New Zealand. For about 55 years the company advertised a blackcurrant-flavoured drink Ribena as being rich in vitamin C, with four times as much as oranges. Turned out there is no vitamin C in this drink and a very small amount of actual blackcurrant juice.  read more »

Monopolization of America

For several decades now there has been happening a chain of events in America that lead to a virtual monopoly in every sector of consumer goods and services. Perhaps it all started with the bold reliance on the Adam Smith's laws of economic self-regulation, but it certainly looks like the government has taken a back seat now. My claim is that in most business segments there is a duo- or tri-poly in USA, with two or three major companies dominating the market and having an easy time of making all sorts of illegal agreements that make them a virtual monopoly.  read more »

Many bloggers are corporate whores!

They do write good product reviews for profit and don't even hide it! They usually go like this "I'm only writing about the products that I really like anyway, so why not make some money on the side?". WRONG!  This is the very start of corporate whorism! At first you may be doing just that, but then what if you are some $100 short for a new IPod (or your family's Hawaii vacation)??? Yes, you will bend the rules a little and start writing about a not so perfect product!  read more »

Alternative consumerism

I am starting to think that the organic or "healthy" (read "hippie" ) way of live is our new wave of consumerism that will soon devour us all. Like this website proclaiming aspartame to be nothing less than "the evil of 20th century" and, of course, behind it - the modern "drug lords" i.e. pharmaceutical companies. Ni-i-i-ice! although didn't see much evidence there....  read more »
