Whilst I completely agree
Whilst I completely agree with your view on the value of open source, the choice to view adverts on the web is still in the hands of the individual. (ie: using Firefox and adblock).
Besides, Ebay still seems to retain some integrity, it could have been a lot worse.

I think you are missing the point. He is saying that things are getting worse and while you may still have some freedoms now (blocking ads is not an option for IE users, 80% all web audience) they could be easily taken away, once in proprietary hands.
