Searching for a search engine

I don't about you but I'm getting pretty fed up with Google and the spam it appears to like presenting me with.

The big question is which search engine to migrate to. I have to admit I do like the results that both Yahoo and MSN present me with but I simply can't face having to download all that news just to perform a quick search. And when you make a search maybe 50 times a day thats a lot of news you're downloading for nothing.

What I need to find is a decent search engine alternative that presents me with good results less all the spam that Google seems to pick up and without the news that is bundled on the home page.

As part of my quest I've tested out a few searches on some of the less popular but still rather large search engines for a service I provide i.e. organic optimisation. Check the results for yourself:

A9 powered by Amazon comes up with some good results but also the odd bit of spam. Ask is pretty much the same. And, the search engine grandarent Alta Vista comes up with really good results but all in the completely wrong order.

But, I think I was most impressed with Excite that not only came up with some decent results but also gives you 20 search results per page.

If you mean Google ads and you are using Firefox, you can use "customize Google" extension to completely remove them https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/743/

Thanks, Alex, but, I was referring to the mass of stupid organic results that are just diverting me somewhere else via affiliate schemes. That Firefox plugin does look useful though. PS. I don't know my post appeared as anonymous. I thought I had logged in until I viewed my post.

I found swicki quite useful, and you can compare its searches with google on the site. http://swicki.eurekster.com/. You can add the code to a blog quite easily and choose your keywords as well as using it more generally. Might be of no use whatsoever to you, but thought i'd respond! Al

Thanks, Al, I tried creating a Swicki search engine - very useful and I like the idea that you can drop the sites that you don't like. Have you created a 43vents search engine yet?
