Go Ahead Punk - Optimize My Day !

Oh they do wind me up - clients that is! Every day I get asked what does it cost to optimise a website for the search engines? Then I reply do you have a budget? and, explain in the in's and out's and I can spend half an hour on the phone and they'll still ask at the end; but what is it gonna cost? and, what would we do for the price?

Why dont they get it? Search engine marketing is the same as any other form of marketing. There are options - lots of them; and it can be hourses for courses. The idea is that you deploy a budget in the most strategic way to give maximum bang for your buck.

So, why doesn't anyone get it? even when you've explained it to them in massive detail. I can understand anyone wanting to know the price of anything but surely these are business people and they have a marketing budget in their business plan.

Aah, now I get it, that dreaded word business plan. I'd forgotten no-one has a business plan in todays world!

i think alot of the brick

i think alot of the brick and mortar biz guys crap their pants when they hear the word internet. but the grapevine communication and their own limited personal experience shows them the value of internet marketing as a revenue channel so they think they have to go out and "buy it" like it is some off the shelf product.

i once had a guy ask me to fill the entire product overview page with keywords. how do you explain to some one that part of the revenue is not just the click through, but the visitor actually getting to the shopping cart checkout destination page?
