Fruits are not sweet anymore

How come most of the fruits that are supposed to be sweet are actually not sweet? Strawberry, kiwi, raspberry, blackberry, even watermelon are not sweet anymore. I want strawberry to be fleshy, juicy and sugary. Not firm and crispy. Same with watermelon. I have to coat strawberries in sugar because they are tasteless or sour without it. It seems that something is injected into the fruit to make it look ripe. You buy strawberry, which looks red but it tastes green. Do people get used to these tasteless fruits and stop noticing the difference?

What about organic, is it

What about organic, is it any better?

Organic doesn't equal good

Organic doesn't equal good ;(

I think it's a big

I think it's a big conspiracy created by the food companies.

I have to agree. Even

I have to agree. Even farmer's market and fresh fruit stands are not what they used to be.
I want sweet fruit too. The natural kind of sweet fruit!

Maybe we are loosing our

Maybe we are loosing our taste buds?

Man! I thought I was the

Man! I thought I was the only one noticing this! It's terrible, the only fruit I can eat now are apples...and maybe grapes...and bananas..but berries--yak!
I think it is one of 2 things:
1) Our taste buds are desensitized by corn syrup
2) Fruits are picked green, so that they ship well, but this prevents the sugars to be produced in the fruit.
Anyway, this pisses me off big time!

Everything is shit, except for urine!

I don’t know what you all

I don’t know what you all talking about, I like my strawberries just as they are; and if they aren’t sweet enough for you—put some Cool Whip on top—that’s how you suppose to eat them!

Cool Whip sucks! I want to

Cool Whip sucks!

I want to taste strawberries not chemicals!

Organic means high prices

Organic means high prices and more horse manure in the soil, which is often is tasted in the fruit.

Weeks and weeks after I

Weeks and weeks after I posted this entry, I accidentally found a letter in 1989 New York Times saying almost the same thing. Here is an excerpt:
"Whose magic wand has turned the luscious little strawberries of yesteryear into pincushions stuffed with pallid cotton? How do Mexico and France manage to produce slim, crunchy haricots, while our string beans have swollen into pods bursting with seeds and scratchy pulp, ideal for the abuses of nouvelle cuisine?

Genetic engineering may replace chemical pesticides, but I get little comfort from your report that commercial and wild tomatoes have been crossed to produce an indestructible fruit with no discernible taste. Must we look forward to grocery shelves of the 21st century loaded with huge fruits and vegetables, resistant to blight, symmetrical and brightly colored, loaded with riboflavin and devoid of savor?"

Indeed, Japan is growing

Indeed, Japan is growing square watermelons now. Alas, no genetic wonders. They just restrict their growth in square cages.

Its our collective fault. By

Its our collective fault. By patronizing the big box stores and supermarket monopolies we have disrespected little joe's grocery and market specialty shops to extinction. So now our choices have been reduced to red rocks labeled plums and nectarines, and iceberg apples that have crunch and sweet and nothing else. What's amazing to me is that bananas and pineapples can show up on the far side of the planet and be marvelous. But we've lost alot in the development. Resist the organic label and buy local. Yeah, its inconvenient, but the taste and future is worth the effort.
