Recent news reports have stated that a catastrophy is inevitable. The Redmond giant is about to devour a not-so-small fish named Yahoo. Despite a couple of initial rejections from Jerry Yang, Microsoft seems to be determined. Now, let us pause for a second to ask this question: Why should you care?
Personally, I don't use any Yahoo products, save an occasinal visit to Flickr, which, in turn, was devoured by Yahoo. I do use Windows XP and MS Office, but that is irrelevant.
So, breaking down into different market segments, what are the pros from the merger:
- Operating Systems: MS gets an edge in developing a Web-based OS => more competition for Google => GOOD
- Office: same => more competition for Google => GOOD
- Online Storage/Image Hosting =>Â more competition for Google => GOOD
- Online ads: no change => WHATEVER
- Web Search: more competition for Google => GOOD
These are just mega-corporations people, wake up! There is no smiley face associated with Yahoo or a manic grin attached to Microsoft. The only chance for us to win is to be demanding of their products, ignore the emotional BS and let them compete, die, devour each other and make new releases of all their crap twice a year!!!
If Microsoft is indeed such a bad company, they will screw up at some point and all the better for us. One thing for sure: as a business Yahoo! already did...
