Monopolization of America

For several decades now there has been happening a chain of events in America that lead to a virtual monopoly in every sector of consumer goods and services. Perhaps it all started with the bold reliance on the Adam Smith's laws of economic self-regulation, but it certainly looks like the government has taken a back seat now.

My claim is that in most business segments there is a duo- or tri-poly in USA, with two or three major companies dominating the market and having an easy time of making all sorts of illegal agreements that make them a virtual monopoly.

Abundant examples keep popping up in my head. Super-retail stores: Walmart, K-mart and Target. Phone companies: AT&T and a couple others. Mobile: Verizon and Cingular. Cable: regional monopolies (like Insight in the mid-west). Operating systems: Microsoft and lagging far behind is Apple. All doughnut places buy their flour from the same company.

What else? Cars: Ford and GM and Chrysler. Isn't that enough?

How come that in Europe the genetically modified food is labeled and here it's not? How come the US HEPA standard for vacuum filters gets 98% if spores and allergens, whereas the same European standard gets 99.97% ?!

I think it is time to call for some government regulation of many of the above aspects. It is of high importance, because your nation is being slowly ... may I say "poisoned" by low-quality products and services, for the benefit of the rich and once the machine is spinning even they can't stop it. So, go ahead and write your representative and demand changes! But wait, they are all a part of the game, aren't they?

Does this call for a revolution?
