Anthrax spores in free access

A friend of mine is taking a medical microbiology class in the university. Well, guess what? they have anthrax spores readily available for their lab experiments. Although, from what I understood, those are not mature enough to become airborne, but one can get infected through the cut or by consuming the spores with food! An the infected person can later produce a culture that is already airborne!

So we are talking about a potential bio-weapon in almost free access (all they had to do is sign some release form before taking the class) to the people who know how it can be used!

Now, seriously, I don't think that something like this has a viable chance of happening, by why then all the noise about anthrax in the envelopes and scanning for it in every airport? Doesn't is smell a little bit like the media, fueled by political interest spinning the story out of proportion?

There was a similar situation with all the craze about a suicide bomber carrying a "suitcase nuclear bomb" on a plane. And then somebody pointed out that for a terrorist it would be much easier to target one of the US nuclear plants, which stood virtually unprotected.
